My grandpa Dan (also named Dan Klee) passed away on March 18th, 2022, one day before his 86th birthday. He was a bit rough around the edges, but he was a good grandpa and I miss him. I wrote this song around the time of his death and I'm releasing it now, close to the 1-year anniversary of his passing. He didn't enjoy this kind of music, but nevertheless, happy birthday, Grandpa Dan.
The elder Dan Klee was a lifelong dog lover, so any streaming or download purchase profits from this song will be donated on my grandpa's behalf to the Oregon Humane Society (www.oregonhumane.org). I'll be posting updates on my website for anyone who cares to follow along: dankleemusic.com/blog
lyrics
You used to love to talk
And always run your mouth off
Could never get a word in edgewise
At least until your heart stopped
But now I'd say that it's a horror
I would say that I'm in love
And I would say goodbye
You always used to say
"You can never take it with you"
And everything you gave away
Somehow would feel just like new
But now I see that it's all over
I can say that it's a shame
I would say that we all miss you
And nothing here will ever be the same
Don't you know that it's a horror?
Don't you know that you were loved?
So now they'll sell the house
And lay your bones to rest
In a plot outside of town
Remove your wedding ring
Pore over every photograph
And try to see the theme
'Cause when you pull the thread
That unravels one whole lifetime
From your deathbed
We’ll have to get along
With all the bits and pieces
Left now that you’re gone
I took your name
It's just like new
I took your name
You can never take it with you

Easily one of my favorite songwriters. Sara Hensel combines the vocal and lyrical acrobatics of Joni Mitchell with the production sensibilities of Blake Mills and robust grooves of Lucy Dacus. Dan Klee
I played drums on this one too! Zygotes is such a fun pop-rock experience. There are a lot of twists and turns for such a concise release -- give it a listen. ;) Dan Klee
