There were limits from the start Genetic disposition The pattern of your heart Was spelling out a different name I was too slow to decipher That you and I were playing different games Now it's back to where you're loved Back to where your family lives And back to where you grew Into the art Out of your mind To cruise the interstate And eat at Harbor Harbor And ride a Laurie to the U.S.S. Fly it to the moon We'll all build telescopes And watch it from the safety of our houses When gravity consumes you And you come back down to earth You can croon your lunar tune Down by the beach I put a sticker in a bathroom stall There's another in my wallet So you know just who to call But the words are ringing in my ears I do not recognize you And there are things that no one wants to hear Like... Back to where you're loved Back to where your family lives And back to where you grew Into the art Only to find You'll cruise the interstate And roast a giant chicken And waste an evening at the Dot Dot Dot Fly it to the moon We'll all build telescopes And watch it from the safety of our houses When gravity consumes you And you come back down to earth You can croon your lunar tune

How long did it take To map out the borders and name all the streets? At what rate Did the tide Of settlers and state Sweep through the valley And fasten a lock at the gate? How much will it cost To rent out a room in the town Where your grandparents rot? It's a gift, A history wrapped in myth. Nothing is manifest, All of these narratives drift. One day at a time, Changes by design, Only to unwind. This place was never mine. How bad would it hurt To uproot the notion That memories live in the dirt Underfoot, Or the air in our lungs? A story's as much in the ear As it is in the tongue. One day at a time, Changes by design, Only to unwind. This place was never mine. Wishes said aloud Are tokens of the proud, While buried in the ground, These bones won't make a sound.

You'll know it when it's true Every bone in your body will resonate And celebrate the news You'll feel it moving through Every moment from the time you were born To the second that you knew That this song would not remain unsung That you could not leave that bell un-rung And the world will look so much clearer As this bus draws ever nearer To Hartford, CT You see it in the sun Every contour and color will quake And the ink will start to run You'll hear it in the hum Every pair of feet in the street Will be stepping to your drum And your heart will start to beat in time And your tongue will start to speak in rhyme And the world will look so much clearer Though this bus draws ever nearer To Hartford, CT

And they all were there Annie Oakley, Marlon Brando, and the Boss They talked about the image and the cost Of living life in such a way to cross From past to present And to minimize the loss I suspect that they were drunk And I've felt the love Of friends and lovers, family and pets It's filled me up and granted me redress Soothing words to offset the distress But still I must admit That there are times I feel regret That I ever got a taste It's a dream I have I wake up in Antarctica at dusk The cold is all around me And I'm breathing in the dust The tracks I've left behind me Are all filling up with frost And I lay me down

Everything is gonna burn When the earthquake hits Then we'll sink into the ocean And everyone will learn Not to put their plans on a pedestal Everyone is gonna fry When the atom splits Then we'll sink into the sea And everyone will die Feeling like a hot-dog in a microwave Someone somewhere's gonna build An ion cannon or a laser beam And that person surely will Either at the sun or at the president They'll ask us all to pay A hefty ransom or to put them on T.V. So we'll build a giant robot And we'll send it into battle And we'll save the sun It'll take a little time before you see the smoke It'll take a little time to sink the boat It'll take a little time before the bank is broke Just you wait a little And it'll sneak up on ya There's a pebble in your shoe Either underneath your heel Or against your toe Listen carefully and I'll tell you what to do You're going to have amputate that foot before the pebble gets into your blood stream and works its way up to your head and then it DESTROYS YOUR BRAIN.

about

"Portraits," the sophomore release from Portland multi-instrumentalist and producer Dan Klee, is an excitingly eclectic collection of musical vistas about people and the places they inhabit. Borrowing both the theatric stylings of artists like Springsteen and the humorous nonchalance of bands like Weezer, Klee introduces listeners to a revolving door of characters, scenes, and topics as varied as youthful optimism, love, creative frustration, political annihilation, fast food drive-ins, and old-west-style shoot-outs.
